Your nasal passages are not fixed. The tissue inside each nostril is erectile, meaning it fills with blood and restricts airflow on a regular cycle. Right now, one nostril is probably slightly more open than the other. In 60 to 90 minutes, the other one will take over.
Researchers have known about this cycle for decades. What became clear in more recent EEG studies is that the dominant nostril correlates with dominant hemisphere activity. When your right nostril is the clearer one, electrical activity in the left hemisphere, the side associated with analytical thinking, language, and sequential processing, tends to be higher. When your left nostril is dominant, the right hemisphere, associated with spatial reasoning, pattern recognition, and emotional processing, is more active.

What Alternate Nostril Breathing Does
Nadi Shodhana, the Sanskrit name for alternate nostril breathing, works by overriding this default cycle. You close one nostril with your fingers and breathe through the other, then switch. Inhale through one side, exhale through the other, then reverse.
In doing this deliberately and repeatedly, you are forcing both hemispheres to activate in sequence rather than waiting for the slow natural cycle to do it. The practice also extends the exhale. In most protocols, the exhale is held to a 1:2 ratio with the inhale, or longer. That extended exhale is not incidental. It is the mechanism that activates the parasympathetic nervous system, slows heart rate, and creates the calm that practitioners report feeling after just a few rounds.
Two effects for one practice: hemispheric balance and autonomic regulation. Neither requires you to believe anything. Both show up in the data.
Why the Timing Matters
There is a practical implication to the nasal cycle that most people miss.
If you do creative work, you may find you do it better when your left nostril is dominant and your right hemisphere is more active. If you need to focus on sequential tasks, the reverse may help. Athletes have used deliberate nostril breathing to shift arousal states before competition for this reason.
You cannot change your nasal cycle by willpower. But you can shortcut it. Lying on your side causes the upper nostril to open and the lower to close, temporarily shifting dominance. Or you can simply breathe through the nostril you want to activate for a few minutes before starting the task.

The most common instruction for beginners is a 4:8 count: inhale for four beats, exhale for eight. The ratio matters more than the absolute length. A longer exhale relative to the inhale is the signal your nervous system reads as safety.
