A paper published in 2026 in Applied Psychophysiology and Biofeedback offers the clearest mechanistic explanation to date for why slow pranayama works. The study was on Bhramari Pranayama, humming breath, but its finding turns out to explain something much broader.

What the Researchers Found

The study examined whether the autonomic benefits of humming breathing came from the vibratory sound produced during exhalation, or from something else. To test this, researchers compared humming breathing against a “calm humming” condition where participants mimicked the breath pattern without producing sound.

The finding: the sound did not matter. What mattered was the frequency.

Participants in both humming conditions showed significantly slower, more stable breathing than at rest or during standard deep breathing exercises. Their respiratory rate clustered near 0.1 Hz, roughly six full breaths per minute. At that frequency, the autonomic nervous system shifts. Heart rate variability increases. Vagal tone activates. The body moves from a stress posture toward a recovery posture.

A companion study in Physiology and Behavior (2025) confirmed the pattern with both slow-paced breathing and humming breathing, finding that both increased SDNN, total power, and low-frequency HRV compared to rest, with no significant difference between methods. The pacing, not the technique, was doing the heavy lifting.

Why This Matters for Alternate Nostril Breathing
